About Pacific Sewer

Effective, Proven Solutions for Municipalities And Contractors

Since 1979, Pacific Sewer Maintenance has provided root control and robotic service solutions for municipalities across America. We are the nation’s oldest provider of chemical root control services, and the only contractor offering ultra-high pressure precision jet cutting services with Sewer Robotics equipment to municipalities and general contractors on the Pacific Coast. In addition to chemical sewer line root control, we offer pipeline robotic services:

  • Precision Hydro Demolition
  • Precision Jet Cutting
  • Mechanical Obstruction Removal
  • Concrete, Grout & Slurry Removal
  • Calcium & Mineralization Removal
  • Tuberculation Removal
  • Cross-Bore & Tieback Removal
  • Root Removal

Our Services

Our root control division uses a foaming root control product that kills roots and prevents regrowth without harm to pipes or above-ground vegetation. Our robotics division uses a highly specialized ultra-high pressure robotic waterjet system specifically designed for pipeline rehabilitation to eliminate solid obstructions from pipes and structures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Pacific Sewer Maintenance do?

PSM specializes in chemical root control and robotic high-pressure obstruction removal. We use an herbicide foam to kill harmful tree roots that damage pipes and sewer lines, and a robotic, ultra-high pressure precision jet cutting system to remove concrete and other blockages.

What communities do you serve?

We primarily serve the Pacific coast, from Southern California to Washington State. However, we take on projects across the entire country, from Los Angeles to New York City.

What root control product do you use?

The preferred root control product uses a combination of metam-sodium to kill roots and dichlobenil to prevent re-growth. This combination was tested by UC Davis to be most effective for sewer root control.

Who needs root control services?

Any municipalities that have trees will have sewer lines impacted by roots. Municipalities needing effective sewer maintenance solutions to prevent root-related stoppages will choose root control over less efficient alternatives.

Aren’t there quicker fixes for roots?

There are temporary methods for cutting roots which are faster, but those are a stop-gap measure and are therefore less cost-effective. Studies show that when roots are mechanically cut only, they re-grow faster after each cut. Chemical root control extends the maintenance cycle to 2-3 years.

Is chemical root control more long-term than cutting roots?

Yes, our recommendation is typically to treat pipes every two years. The more frequently pipes are treated, the less likely these roots will return to seek that source. Some municipalities treat their pipes every year, which allows the product to extend into pipe joints and lateral connections, preventing root regrowth.

Does root control battle all kinds of roots?

Yes, our product can control roots for all tree species.

What is Pacific Sewer Robotics?

In addition to our industry-leading chemical root control treatment, Pacific Sewer provides innovative, robotic high-pressure services to clear pipeline obstructions without the disruption of digging.

What can the robot remove from pipelines?

Just about anything! Our robot uses high-pressure water of up to 15,000 PSI to break down concrete, slurry, grout, calcium, tuberculation, large roots, and more. If we can’t break it down with water, we can remove it with our hydraulically-driven mechanical cutter.

Why use a robot?

There are many instances where excavation to access a pipe is a major inconvenience or impossibility. The robot allows us to remotely service difficult to reach places with a fully articulated CCTV-operating system. This technology has allowed us to perform work in a range of environments including in tunnels 200 feet below New York’s East River, on an active airfield runway, and on busy downtown Los Angeles streets.

Do you have to shut down sewer flow for robotic work?

No, if the sewer flow is 20% or less, we can perform our work without the need for sewer flow shut down. If the flow is greater than 20%, bypassing the effluent is the most effective process.
